Two Positions in Composition


San Francisco State University is accepting applications for two positions in Composition, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (with or without tenure), beginning Fall 2008. Primary responsibility will be to teach graduate courses that prepare individuals to teach composition and reading to diverse populations at the community college level. Other responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, mentoring M.A. thesis students, observing and mentoring new teachers, and assisting with writing program administration.

Minimum Qualifications:
… Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Composition/Rhetoric or related field.

Desirable Qualifications:
… Emphasis on reading-writing connections
… Experience in the use of technology for teaching
… Experience in, or willingness to contribute to, composition program administration and portfolio assessment
… Specialized knowledge of strategies for teaching multicultural texts
… Publications in area(s) of expertise

General Responsibilities:
… Teach up to three courses per semester, including graduate courses in theory and pedagogy of post-secondary composition and/or reading, and research methodology; and undergraduate courses in integrated reading-writing or composition
… Contribute to the multi-faceted University-wide effort to improve student writing
… Advise students working on the Certificate in Teaching Post-Secondary Reading, the Certificate in the Teaching of Composition, and/or the Master's in Composition
… Supervise and mentor lecturers and graduate teaching assistants teaching undergraduate composition
… Periodically coordinate part or all of the undergraduate writing program and the graduate M.A. and Certificate programs

The Department:
The Department of English offers three undergraduate degrees, a state-approved secondary education subject matter program, four graduate degrees, and two post-secondary teaching certificates.

The M.A. in English with a Concentration in Composition combines reading-writing theory, research, and pedagogy with practical preparation to teach in California's diverse post-secondary schools. The concentration prepares teachers and scholars in the fields of Composition, Post-Secondary Reading and Literacy Studies. Emphasizing the integration of reading and writing instruction at advanced secondary, community college, and college levels, it provides both professional preparation for writing teachers and supervisors, and a rigorous scholarly foundation for students preparing for doctoral work in composition, literacy studies, education, or adult literacy.
